Becoming the Renaissance Admin
Created By: Herman, Marie On Thu, Mar 11, 2010 03:38 PM
One of the career paths I have given serious consideration to (more so than just about all the others) is becoming a motivational speaker. I'm giving a keynoter presentation today on "Becoming the Renaissance Admin" to a local company and I'm really excited about it. The program is based on an article of the same name published in the June 2007 issue of Office Pro magazine. (Sorry, they don't have that year in the Office Pro electronic archives yet, but I've posted a PDF here http://www.mrhenterprises.com/articles/RenAdmin.pdf).

This program is actually one of the best ones I have put together (in my opinion of course). I have given it a few times already and finetuned it substantially. Essentially, the program focuses on why we get pigeon holed by our employers and potentially passed over for promotions and what we can do to "shake up the thinking" of our co-workers to expand our role in the company and be taken more seriously as employees and have our opinions valued.

I could easily expand this to become a half day or full day seminar. In fact, this is a starting topic that I am strongly considering expanding to a book (though it would probably become the more generic "employee" rather than administrative professional to have a wider appeal, though I might end up with different "versions" for different job functions).

I need to research what it takes to be considered as a keynoter for a large event/meeting. Do you think you have to register with a speaker's bureau to really be successful?

If anyone has seen me speak and would be willing to write a few lines of testimonial that I could use in developing marketing materials, I would definitely appreciate it! You can email it to me at
iaap@mrhenterprises.com. :)

Marie, the website FabJob.com sells a number of "How to Become..." guides. I checked and sure enough, they've got one for how to become a motivational speaker. Check it out at http://www.fabjob.com/guides.asp.
Here's your testimonial: Marie Herman's presentation was focused and relevant with genuinely helpful ideas. Thanks to her humor and positive energy, she easily kept the audience entertained and engaged throughout the session. I would encourage anyone to attend Marie's programs.
Marie,
I do a fair bit of local keynoting. My suggestion is to register with your local chamber of commerce- offer to do a session for them.. they are always looking for speakers for events. You may have to modify it to address teh business owners instead of admins. Also- Rotary, Lions clubs are good places to start. Lastly, find a mentor.. a speaker that you know or are comfortable with.. and ask them to be your mentor.
I'll drop you an additional note privately. but I do wish you the best of luck!-
Marie -- I'd love to see your presentation on "becoming the renaissance admin" -- I've sat in on several of your EFAM brainstorming sessions and find you to be a very compelling speaker because you are speaking directly from the heart, from your passion about your chosen profession. Please feel free to use this as a testimonial, if you wish.
Hi Marie,
One place you may want to consider researching is the Toastmasters group. They are a group dedicated to becoming a speaker and leader. Although I do not have personal experience with the group, I have heard a lot about it and you can see if there is a group in your local area.
Hope this helps. Congratulations on taking action towards your goal!
